CAMS announces Tarmac Rally Championship for Classic Cars

The Board of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport has approved the establishment of the Australian Classic Tarmac Rally Championship for cars that date pre 1982.

The championship recognises the growing status of tarmac rallying, involving classic cars, and its participants in Australia.  The 2009 Australian Classic Tarmac Rally Championship will be decided over three events with each event counting for points:

Rd 1 - Rally Tasmania (14-15 February)
Rd 2 - Targa West (20-23 August)
Rd 3 - Classic Adelaide (18-22 November)

The success of tarmac rallies is highly dependent on classic cars and each event in the championship is endeavouring to promote the cars and increase the level of interest among the public and the media.

What the competitors had to say in 2008:

Steven Jones
2008 Winner Competition Modern Class:
“To be amongst guys like that (Jim Richards and Kevin Weeks), they just push you all the way and you can’t be caught out at any time, I was flat out on my toes the whole rally. We just had to be the best we could be and that’s the only way we could get here.”

Alister McRae
2008 Winner Competition Classic Class:
It was interesting for me, the first time driving classic car, obviously I wanted to win the classic event, but also good to see how we’d go against modern cars and it’s gone very well!”

Kym Illman
2008 Winner Challenge Modern Class:
It is very satisfying we only won by 5-6 seconds had some great rivalry with the boys with Simon (Gunson) and Murray (Armenti), and it was fantastic fun we just live for the weekend.

Jim Richards:
“It gets harder every year”

David Moir:
“It was interesting, really diverse range of cars and we’re all so close at the end, it’s been a great couple of days.”

Kevin Weeks:

“This was the most competitive rally I think we’ve ever been in, it was unbelievable and so fast!”
